Interview with Jaye L. Knight

Jaye, welcome back to Homeschooled Authors. What have you been up to since you were here last?
Lots of writing related stuff. :) I finished writing book four of Ilyon Chronicles, started book five, finished a secret project I plan to unveil very soon, and I just published The King’s Scrolls, book two of Ilyon Chronicles. It seem like right when I think things will quiet down a bit, I launch into another big project.

How soon after Resistance did you write The King's Scrolls?
I started working on it within a day or two of finishing Resistance. I never wait very long to start my next books. There’s something especially fun about putting down the first words of a novel, so I’m always anxious to dive right in.

Which character are you most like?
That would be Jace . . . you know, except for the fact that he’s a guy. :) We have similar personalities. I always say he’s the more intense male version of me. We’re both quiet and introverted, but very loyal and protective of those we care about. I also know what it’s like to struggle with depression and mistrust.


When I read the story, it seemed to me that you poured a lot of your personal journey and emotions into the story. Is that true?

Yes, very much so. The last couple of years I’ve been writing this series have been very difficult for me personally in many ways. I think God gave me this story as a way to work through that. When I write, I can see Him working in the background of my characters’ lives, even if they can’t see it, and that helps me remember that He’s working in my life, even when I can’t see it. So yes, a lot of my emotions from different things I’ve faced definitely work their way in, even if my characters are facing completely different struggles than I am.

If you could magically have one costume from your books, which would it be?
As much as I love beautiful medieval ball gowns, I love rugged, serviceable costumes even more. If it has rough linen and leather (like Aragorn’s ranger outfit or the Huntsmen from Snow White and the Huntsmen), it’s a pretty sure bet I’ll be in love with it. So I’d have to say I’d choose one of Jace’s costumes. I always imagine him wearing outfits similar to this. It has everything I love about such costumes.

You also design jewelry. Do you have a piece that is inspired by The King's Scrolls?
I have a few pieces that are inspired by The King’s Scrolls, plus more to come, but my favorite is probably this fox necklace. It’s inspired by Talas, one of my favorite characters from the book. The little fox charm is just so adorable. I think I’ll be wearing my own necklace quite a lot.

What is next for this series?
I’m just getting started on editing book three, Samara’s Peril. I would like to be able to publish it for Christmas this year. It’s more of a hope than an actual plan, but we’ll see what happens. I will be shooting for a late fall release, but it all depends on how editing goes. Beyond that, I really need to get working on book five and get it written sooner rather than later. I don’t want to have to wait too long between releases just because I’m still writing one of the books.
