Hope Pennington on Fairytale

Hope, Welcome to Homschooled Authors! Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Hope Pennington and I'm a homeschooled author.  I adore fantasy, sci-fi, history and adventure!  Books are my home, imagination is my playground and Jesus is my best friend.  I'm a NERD when it comes to the things I love and could talk your ear off about them for hours if unsupervised.  I also love nature and people and explore both of those things in a big way through writing! :)

Everyone’s homeshooling experience is different. What do you think made yours unique?
Well my mom definitely paid careful attention to where our natural gifts were and what we were super interested in and helped train us a lot in that field.  For me that was art and writing so I was allowed to write historical fiction for history projects or make little comics to explain what I'd learned in grammar class besides taking more art and writing classes then the other kids.  That was awesome.

How did being homeschooled prepare you to write?
For sure all the reading we did made me want to write.  I'd say 75% of our school was reading and that gave me a large vocabulary and just helped me to fall IN LOVE with books.

What caused you to start writing?
What caused me to start writing is I ran out of things to read.  My favorite genre has always been fantasy and I pretty quickly read all the clean fantasy we had so I felt like the only option was to write more.  Plus I'm a very picky reader.  As a kid I would get easily frustrated with poorly written books so I felt like to get a new good book to read I'd just have to write one.

What inspired Fairytale?
My sister J Grace was my biggest inspiration.  She was writing ever since she was a little girl and I was reading her writings.  It struck me that if she could write lovely things with just a computer and her imagination then maybe I could too!  I'm still a huge huge fan of her writing and it inspires me to write more!

Would you give us a synopsis?
When Sean Williams is yanked into a fairytale his teen snark is no longer enough to face the world around him but his ability to predict the cliché plot may be the only thing that can save their world. -- Fairytale

Who Will enjoy Fairytale?
It's a YA fantasy so teens to 20 something's with a love of fantasy is the target audience.  It's a bit like Percy Jackson or maybe BBCs Merlin as far as comedy mixed with fantasy goes.  Fantasy that doesn't take itself super seriously.

Do you plan to write more books?
I have so many books in the work it can't even name them all but I certainly want to write a sequel to Fairytale and I have a middle grade series I'm writing with my brother about mythical creatures going to a modern highschool called "Myth" and another genre perody idea called "My Boyfriend the Ghost" which is going to be a lighthearted paranormal story that's able to touch a little more on spiritual aspects of my faith then my other fantasies have.  But those are all in the works so I can't promise anything.

Where can people connect with you online?
I put updates about my work as well as my fanfics on my blog www.TheEpicPlace.com and you can also get updates through Facebook, Pintrest, Instagram, Twitter, Tumbler or YouTube.  I'm Hope Pennington everywhere.  But if you want to email me about anything my business email is hope@theepicplace.com and I look forward to seeing you over there!

Do you have any final thoughts?
My final thoughts are...that writing or reading or watching movies or TV is all a part of the process we take to help ourselves see what it's like to be a real hero.  It's how we can get inspired and energized but what I hope everyone everywhere could realize is that you are the hero in this story and what you do everyday makes an incredible difference.  Books may tell amazing stories but you have the power to change this story today and you're rocking it.

Thank you all so much for reading.  I hope you have an EPIC day and God bless.

  1. Wow, it's so inspiring to know there are writers out there like me who have actually published amazing books! Fairytale sounds like a lot of fun to read! I've always written more of the serious high fantasy but this interview has made me realize there is so much more within the genre. Great post. :)
